Bach – Christmas Oratorio

Bach – Christmas Oratorio (Weihnachtsoratorium) completed in 1734, it is a set of six cantatas intended for performance during the Christmas season. Each cantata corresponds to a specific feast day within the Christmas period.

Part I – For Christmas Day: Cantatas 1-3 are performed on Christmas Day. They narrate the birth of Jesus, the annunciation to the shepherds, and the adoration of the shepherds.
Part II – For St. Stephen’s Day (December 26): Cantatas 4 and 5 are designated for St. Stephen’s Day. They depict the stoning of Stephen and the journey of the Wise Men.
Part III – For the Third Day of Christmas: Cantatas 6 and 7 are intended for the Third Day of Christmas. They focus on the adoration of the Wise Men and the flight into Egypt.
Part IV – For New Year’s Day: Cantatas 8-10 are performed on New Year’s Day. They celebrate the circumcision and naming of Jesus and present themes of thanksgiving and dedication.
Part V – For the Sunday After New Year: Cantatas 11-12 are for the Sunday after New Year. They recount the journey of the Holy Family to Jerusalem and include the episode of Jesus in the temple.
Part VI – For the Feast of the Epiphany: Cantatas 13-14 are designated for the Feast of the Epiphany, focusing on the adoration of the Magi and the presentation in the temple.
