Mendelssohn composed the music for Shakespeare’s play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Op. 61, in 1842. This work consists of two parts: the Overture, which Mendelssohn wrote when he was only 17 years old, and a set of incidental music pieces to be played throughout the play. The overture, in particular, is one of Mendelssohn’s most famous compositions and is often performed as a standalone concert piece.
