Bach’s Christmas Oratorio is a monumental work composed for the Christmas season, celebrating the birth of Christ through vibrant choruses, arias, and recitatives. Although the Christmas Oratorio is primarily for choir, soloists, and orchestra, the cello plays an important role within the continuo group, often along with harpsichord or organ, providing harmonic support and depth to the ensemble. The cello’s primary role is as part of the basso continuo, where you provide the harmonic foundation along with the double bass and keyboard instruments.
