Niels Gade (1817–1890) was a Danish composer, conductor, violinist, and teacher who played a significant role in the musical life of Denmark during the 19th century. He was one of the most prominent Danish composers of the Romantic era and contributed to the development of a distinct Danish national musical style. Gade's compositions include symphonies, overtures, chamber music, piano works, and choral music. He was influenced by German Romantic composers, especially Mendelssohn, and incorporated Danish folk elements into his works. "Erlkönigs Tochter" and "In the Highlands" are notable overtures by Gade.
